From the Operating Room to Entrepreneurship

How a Filipino Anesthesia Nurse in Norway Built Success Beyond Healthcare

For many Filipino nurses working abroad, success is measured by professional milestones: obtaining licensure, adapting to a new healthcare system, and advancing into specialized practice. For one Filipino nurse in Norway, however, success became much more than a career achievement. It became a journey of resilience, lifelong learning, and building financial opportunities beyond the hospital walls.

Today, he works as an anesthesia nurse while also managing condominium investments and a pizza business in the Philippines.

"I never imagined that I would one day balance a career in anesthesia nursing while running businesses back home," he said. "Looking back, it wasn't a straight path. There were many challenges, failures, and sacrifices along the way."

Starting Again in Norway

Moving to Norway presented obstacles he had not anticipated.

"My nursing qualification from the Philippines was not recognized when I arrived," he recalled. "It was difficult because I already knew what I was capable of as a nurse, but I wasn't allowed to practice in the same way."

Rather than becoming discouraged, he chose to see the challenge as an opportunity.

"I had two choices. I could complain about the situation, or I could work towards a solution. I chose the second."

He worked as a nursing assistant while learning Norwegian and adapting to a completely different healthcare culture.

"There were times when I wondered if the sacrifices were worth it," he admitted. "Learning the language, studying again, and adjusting to a new country required patience. But I knew I was investing in my future."

The Road to Becoming an Anesthesia Nurse

His determination eventually led him back to university.

"I knew that if I wanted to grow professionally, I needed to continue my education," he explained.

The journey was not easy. Language examinations, academic requirements, and the demands of balancing work and study all tested his perseverance.

"I failed some exams along the way," he said. "Nobody likes to fail. But every setback taught me something. Eventually, I learned that failure isn't the opposite of success. It's part of success."

Today, he works in one of nursing's most demanding specialties.

"Anesthesia nursing requires constant vigilance," he explained. "You are responsible for monitoring patients during some of the most critical moments of their care. Every decision matters."

Patient safety remains at the center of his work.

"Before every procedure, I ask myself how I can ensure the safest possible experience for the patient. That's always the priority."

Looking Beyond the Paycheck

While advancing his career in healthcare, he also began thinking about long-term financial security. Like many overseas Filipino workers, he understood that professional success alone would not necessarily guarantee financial freedom in the future. This realization motivated him to explore investments and entrepreneurship alongside his clinical work.

Over time, those efforts grew into condominium investments and a pizza business in the Philippines. Rather than viewing entrepreneurship solely as an additional source of income, he saw it as an opportunity to create something sustainable while developing new skills beyond healthcare. Drawing from his nursing background, he applied the same principles of planning, critical thinking, and problem-solving to managing his businesses.

For him, entrepreneurship is about more than financial gain. It is about building opportunities, creating value for others, and establishing a foundation for long-term stability.

Lessons About Money and Life

The journey has also taught him important lessons about financial literacy and personal growth.

Looking back, he admits that if he could change one thing, he would have started investing earlier. Like many professionals beginning their careers abroad, his initial focus was on earning and meeting immediate financial responsibilities. Over time, however, he came to appreciate the importance of saving, investing, and making intentional financial decisions.

One of the most valuable lessons he learned involves setting boundaries.

"As Filipinos, we naturally want to help everyone. There's nothing wrong with helping family, but you also need to secure your own future. You cannot pour from an empty cup."

Today, he encourages fellow nurses to develop healthy financial habits early and to view investing as a long-term commitment rather than a short-term goal.

Balancing Two Worlds

Balancing a demanding career in anesthesia nursing with entrepreneurial responsibilities requires discipline, organization, and careful time management. Although many people ask how he manages both roles, he believes there is no perfect formula for achieving balance.

The realities of healthcare mean that some days are dedicated entirely to patient care, while others require attention to business matters. Over the years, he has learned the importance of prioritizing what matters most in a given moment and accepting that balance often shifts according to life's demands.

Equally important, he has come to recognize the value of self-care.

"I've learned that taking care of myself isn't selfish. It's necessary."

Maintaining physical health, spending time with loved ones, and making room for personal interests have become essential components of sustaining both his professional and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Advice for Filipino Nurses

Reflecting on his experiences, he hopes other Filipino nurses will recognize that their skills and potential extend far beyond traditional career pathways.

The competencies developed through nursing, including communication, leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making, can open doors to opportunities in business, education, management, and other fields. He believes nurses should never limit themselves to a single definition of success.

Most importantly, he encourages healthcare professionals to remain resilient when faced with setbacks.

"There will always be obstacles. You will face rejection, failure, and moments of doubt. But if you continue learning and keep moving forward, those obstacles can become stepping stones."

His message is simple: continue learning, remain adaptable, and never underestimate the value of perseverance.

More Than a Success Story

Today, his journey represents far more than individual achievement. It is a story about resilience, reinvention, and the willingness to embrace opportunities both inside and outside the healthcare profession.

From arriving in Norway and rebuilding his nursing career to earning a master's degree in anesthesia nursing and establishing successful business ventures in the Philippines, his path demonstrates that success rarely follows a straight line. Rather, it is often built through persistence, hard work, and the courage to pursue goals beyond one's comfort zone.

Looking back, he remains grateful for both the triumphs and challenges that shaped his journey.

"It wasn't always easy, but every challenge taught me something valuable."

For Filipino nurses around the world, his story offers a powerful reminder that success is not defined by where you start, but by your determination to keep moving forward.
