Project in details
1. Project Background and Objectives
Internationally educated nurses (IENs) often face racism and discrimination in healthcare settings, both from patients and colleagues. These experiences include microaggressions, exclusion, and biased treatment, which negatively impact their well-being and professional integration. Despite the growing diversity in healthcare, there is a lack of accessible, easy-to-understand materials that address these issues and promote respectful interaction. This project, RAISE the BAR (Bilingual Anti-Racism), aims to develop bilingual (Easy Finnish and English) training materials to raise awareness among healthcare staff and patients about the challenges faced by IENs and to promote anti-racist practices.
2. Target Group
The primary target groups are healthcare staff members and patients in Finnish healthcare institutions. The secondary target group includes internationally educated nurses who will benefit from increased awareness and inclusion.
3. Activities and Timeline
• January 2026-March 2026: Needs assessment and stakeholder consultation
• April-July 2026: Development of bilingual training materials
• August 2026 – September 2026: Review and feedback from target groups
• October 2026 – December 2026: Finalization and publication on the organization’s website
4. Expected Results and Impact
The project will result in the creation of bilingual training materials that promote anti-racism and inclusivity in healthcare. These materials will be freely accessible on our website. The project is expected to foster respectful communication, reduce bias, and support the integration of internationally educated nurses.
