Philippine Ambassador Joins Filipino Health Workforce Gathering in Gothenburg; FiNAN and Partners Strengthen Support for IENs in Sweden
FiNAN, in partnership with the Guild of Filipino Nurses in Sweden, convened a significant gathering of Filipino nurses and allied health workers aimed at enhancing professional support, community empowerment, and opportunities for IENs in Sweden.
Gothenburg, Sweden — 28 February 2026. The Filipino Nurses Association in the Nordic Region (FiNAN), in partnership with the Guild of Filipino Nurses in Sweden, convened a significant gathering of Filipino nurses and allied health workers aimed at enhancing professional support, community empowerment, and opportunities for internationally educated nurses (IENs) in Sweden.
The event was held at the Grand Curiosa Hotel in Gothenburg and was graced by His Excellency Patrick A. Chuasoto, Philippine Ambassador to Sweden. In his message, Ambassador Chuasoto expressed his appreciation for the vital work FiNAN continues to do in strengthening the Filipino nursing community, emphasizing its role in shaping a more unified and empowered Filipino presence in Swedish healthcare.
A key highlight of the gathering was a comprehensive presentation delivered by Dr. Kerstin Ulin, Vice Head of Education and Director of Studies for the Bridging Programme for Nurses at the University of Gothenburg. Tailored for internationally educated nurses outside the EU/EEA, the programme provides a structured pathway for these professionals to obtain recognition and qualify as Registered Nurses (sjuksköterska) in Sweden. Her session was attended by Filipino IENs and health workers eager to learn about the academic and professional requirements for integration into the Swedish healthcare system.
Adding inspiration to the event, Dr. William Son Galanza, who recently defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Gothenburg, spoke about the dynamic nature of career growth. He emphasized that professional progression is not always linear, but is influenced by structural recognition, cultural adaptation, and strategic specialization.
Representing the Guild of Filipino Nurses in Sweden were officers who actively support Filipino healthcare workers across the country, including:
- Joy Kong Wallander (President)
- Maryrose Velazco Mårtensson (Vice President)
- Gemma Lilac Epler (Secretary) (in absentia)
- Janice Karen Velazco (Board Member)
- Jezylle Joy Tiu (Board Member)
- Cherish Mizona (Board Member) (in absentia)
The event was made possible through the sponsorship of Megaworld International, a dedicated supporter of FiNAN since 2022, known for empowering Filipino nurses across the Nordic region through community programmes and support initiatives.
The gathering signifies a strengthened collaboration among community leaders, academic institutions, and the Philippine diplomatic mission, collectively aiming to improve access, recognition, and opportunities for Filipino nurses and allied health workers in Sweden.
